Dallas Mavericks News

Confirmed Lineup: Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Derrick Jones Jr., PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford

The Mavs checked off box one in their attempt to become the first-ever team to overcome a 3-0 series deficit. As is well known, NBA teams are 156-0 in winning series after having a 3-0 lead, a total that includes both Boston and Dallas' wins in this year's Eastern and Western Conference Finals, respectively. NBA teams also have a 14-0 record in the Finals after taking a 3-0 series lead. Only three of the 14 teams to face a 0-3 deficit in the Finals have ever even gone so far as to force a Game 6: the 1996 Supersonics, the 1951 Knicks, and the 1949 Capitols. Dallas will attempt to become the fourth team to do that in Monday's game at TD Garden.

While Game 4 went off the rails early on, one notable statistic from the Dallas side was Doncic's on-ball defensive improvement. Members of the Celtics shot 2-11 when defended by Doncic, including a combined 0-8 by Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, and Jrue Holiday. Doncic is playing banged up, but he'll need to be at an high level on both sides of the floor if the Mavs are to do the impossible and come back in this series.

Boston Celtics News

Confirmed Lineup: Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Al Horford

  • Kristaps Porzingis (foot) — Available

Porzingis is officially listed questionable for this game, and it seems likely that his availability and actual chances of getting into Game 5 will come down to pre-game warmups on Monday and how trainers assess his foot. In Game 4, he was deemed available by the team but only in specific instances, if necessary. While the blowout score seemed to eliminate any chance of those specific instances becoming necessary, it appeared likely that the team wasn't going to play him in any competitive minutes.

While the Celtics are still firmly in control headed into Game 5 and can win the title at home, it is curious to note that Dallas' huge victory in Game 4 has actually given the Mavs the advantage in total points over the duration of the series at 408-402. It's possible that, with a narrow Game 5 win, the Celtics could win the series while having a negative point differential. That's only happened once since the 2006 Finals; the 2013 Heat won the title despite being outscored 684-679 in seven games by the Spurs that year.
