Week 3 Fantasy Football Rankings - The Blueprint

Sep 22nd 2022

Hayden Winks

Every site has a fantasy football rankings column. None of them will be as charted up on a Thursday afternoon up as this one. I'll go position-by-position with the charts, matchup notes, film, and injury nuggets that I view as worth your time.

Week 3 QB Rankings

1. Josh Allen - Bills @ MIA (28.75 points, -4.5 spread)

Dolphins CB1 Xavien Howard (Questionable, DNP-limited, limited) is banged up, and CB2 Byron Jones (IR) is out.

2. Jalen Hurts - Eagles @ WAS (27.0, -6.5)

Check out our video on how Jalen Hurts has evolved as a passer. Great matchup, as discussed here.

3. Patrick Mahomes - Chiefs @ IND (28.0, -5.5)

Great matchup, as discussed here.

4. Lamar Jackson - Ravens @ NE (23.25, -2.5)

5. Joe Burrow - Bengals @ NYJ (25.75, -6)

Great matchup, as discussed here. In short, the Bengals' Cover 2 problems won't be a problem against the Jets' single-high defense. Bounce back.

6. Kyler Murray - Cardinals vs. LAR (22.5, +3.5)

The Rams are missing: CB2 Troy Hill (out), CB3 David Long (out), CB4 Decobie Durant (out), and potentially S Jordan Fuller (full-limited-DNP).

7. Kirk Cousins - Vikings vs. DET (29.25, -6)

The Vikings are projected for the most points of Week 3.

8. Matthew Stafford - Rams @ ARI (26.0, -3.5)

Great matchup, as discussed here.

9. Derek Carr - Raiders @ TEN (24.0, -2)

Great matchup, as discussed here. Titans are missing: EDGE Harold Landry (IR), EDGE Bud Dupree (out), SCB Elijah Molden (IR), and S/CB Ugo Amadi (out). This is a great matchup for Carr and Davante Adams. Hunter Renfrow (concussion) is out.

10. Tua Tagovailoa - Dolphins vs. BUF (24.25, +6)

11. Russell Wilson - Broncos vs. SF (21.25, +1.5)

12. Tom Brady - Bucs vs. GB (21.5, -1)

LT Donovan Smith is probably back, but Chris Godwin (out), Julio Jones (game-time decision), and Russell Gage (DNP Friday) are all hurt. Expect them to lean onto the run here.

13. Aaron Rodgers - Packers @ TB (20.5, +1)

14. Justin Fields - Bears vs. HOU (21.0, -3)

15. Marcus Mariota - Falcons @ SEA (20.5, +1)

16. Jared Goff - Lions vs. MIN (23.25, +6)

17. Carson Wentz - Commanders vs. PHI (20.5, +6.5)

18. Jameis Winston - Saints @ CAR (21.75, -2.5)

19. Matt Ryan - Colts vs. KC (22.5, +5.5)

20. Trevor Lawrence - Jaguars @ LAC (19.5, +3.5)

21. Daniel Jones - Giants vs. DAL (20.0, -1)

22. Jimmy Garoppolo - 49ers @ DEN (22.75, -1.5)

23. Ryan Tannehill - Titans vs. LV (22.0, +2)

24. Mac Jones - Patriots vs. BAL (20.75, +2.5)

25. Baker Mayfield - Panthers vs. NO (19.25, +2.5)

26. Geno Smith - Seahawks vs. ATL (21.5, -1)

27. Davis Mills - Texans @ CHI (18.0, +3)

28. Joe Flacco - Jets vs. CIN (19.25, +6)

29. Jacoby Brissett - Browns vs. PIT (21.5, -4.5)

30. Chase Daniel - Chargers vs. JAX (23.0, -3.5)

Justin Herbert (ribs) is pushing for a pain-injection to play through his injury (yes, the Tyrod Taylor one), but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports "there was growing skepticism about his status going into the weekend; the decision to play has bounced back and forth throughout the week." The betting markets made a huge move towards the Jaguars on Friday, so this continues to trend in the wrong direction. Daniel very well could start in the afternoon window. Keenan Allen (hamstring) is questionable, with Schefter reporting the slot receiver "would like to try and play, but it's not certain he will." I could see the Chargers taking the long view here, after star CB J.C. Jackson re-injured his ankle in his return last week.

31. Cooper Rush - Cowboys @ NYG (19.0, +1)

32. Mitch Trubisky - Steelers @ CLE (17.0, +4.5)

Week 3 RB Rankings

Read the player notes above. Rankings are half PPR.

  1. Jonathan Taylor

  2. Christian McCaffrey

  3. Saquon Barkley

  4. Joe Mixon

  5. Dalvin Cook - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  6. Nick Chubb

  7. Javonte Williams

  8. Austin Ekeler - This reflects Herbert's iffy status, but Chase Daniel could easily turn into a check-down king for Ekeler.

  9. Derrick Henry - Losing LT Taylor Lewan really stinks, but volume is there.

  10. D'Andre Swift - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  11. Leonard Fournette (Questionable) - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  12. Alvin Kamara (Questionable) - It sounds like he'll play through his injury, but Mark Ingram would be the RB29 if Kamara is surprisingly out. Ingram handled most early-down snaps despite playing through an ankle injury, while Tony Jones Jr. played passing downs.

  13. James Conner (Questionable) - He will work out before the game to make sure he is ready after going DNP-limited-limited in practice this week, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Conner "is on track to play". Expect Darrel Williams (early downs) and Eno Benjamin (passing downs) to split work if Conner is surprisingly out. Neither would be top-25 RB options in my rankings.

  14. Antonio Gibson

  15. Najee Harris

  16. Aaron Jones

  17. A.J. Dillon

  18. David Montgomery

  19. Jeff Wilson

  20. Clyde Edwards-Helaire

  21. Cordarrelle Patterson

  22. Miles Sanders

  23. James Robinson - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  24. Kareem Hunt

  25. Damien Harris

  26. Michael Carter

  27. Dameon Pierce

  28. Josh Jacobs (Questionable) - He traveled a day late due to illness and remains questionable. He's been running well and the matchup is reasonable, but it's unclear how severe this illness is. If ruled out, Zamir White and Brandon Bolden would split early-down work while Ameer Abdullah hung out on passing downs. None would be top-35 RB options.

  29. Jamaal Williams

  30. Breece Hall

  31. Ezekiel Elliott

  32. Darrell Henderson - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape.

  33. Cam Akers

  34. Tony Pollard

  35. Melvin Gordon

  36. Rhamondre Stevenson

  37. Travis Etienne

  38. Devin Singletary

  39. Chase Edmonds

  40. Raheem Mostert

  41. Khalil Herbert

  42. Jerick McKinnon

  43. J.D. McKissic

  44. Nyheim Hines

  45. Rashaad Penny

  46. J.K. Dobbins (Questionable) - He's on track to play, but all the Twitter doctors remain concerned. This is a wait-and-see player, especially with the Ravens dead last in RB fantasy usage through two weeks.

  47. Kenneth Gainwell

  48. Rachaad White

  49. Rex Burkhead

  50. Ken Walker

Week 3 WR Rankings

Read the player notes above. Rankings are half PPR.

  1. Cooper Kupp

  2. Justin Jefferson

  3. Davante Adams - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  4. Stefon Diggs - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  5. Ja'Marr Chase - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape. Great matchup, as discussed here.

  6. Tyreek Hill

  7. Amon-Ra St. Brown

  8. A.J. Brown

  9. Michael Pittman - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  10. Jaylen Waddle

  11. Deebo Samuel

  12. Courtland Sutton - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape.

  13. Tee Higgins - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  14. Mike Williams - This assumes both Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen are out. Either one could play, so Williams is a volatile WR1/2.

  15. Christian Kirk - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape.

  16. Marquise Brown - The Rams secondary is banged up: CB2 Troy Hill (out), CB3 David Long (out), CB4 Decobie Durant (out), and S Jordan Fuller (full-limited-DNP).

  17. Brandin Cooks

  18. Michael Thomas

  19. Rashod Bateman - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape.

  20. Drake London

  21. Amari Cooper

  22. CeeDee Lamb

  23. Diontae Johnson

  24. Allen Robinson - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  25. JuJu Smith-Schuster

  26. Curtis Samuel - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape. He also has a great matchup, as discussed here.

  27. Terry McLaurin

  28. D.J. Moore

  29. Allen Lazard (Questionable) - He's expected to play and will have less target competition this week. Sammy Watkins (IR) and Christian Watson (highly questionable) are injured, leaving Lazard with Romeo Doubs and Randall Cobb at receiver.

  30. Adam Thielen

  31. Tyler Lockett

  32. DK Metcalf

  33. Brandon Aiyuk

  34. Elijah Moore

  35. Garrett Wilson - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape.

  36. DeVonta Smith

  37. Chris Olave - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape.

  38. Darnell Mooney

  39. Marquez Valdes-Scantling - Great matchup, as discussed here.

  40. Gabriel Davis (Questionable) - This assumes he's not at full health.

  41. Jerry Jeudy (Questionable) - This assumes Jeudy plays through his shoulder/ribs injury and is somewhat limited by it.

  42. Jahan Dotson

  43. Jarvis Landry

  44. Sterling Shepard

  45. D.J. Chark

  46. Tyler Boyd

  47. Robbie Anderson

  48. Greg Dortch

  49. Zay Jones

  50. Chase Claypool

  51. Corey Davis

  52. Treylon Burks - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape. This week, Kyle Phillips (Doubtful) is banged up, so Burks should play more snaps in general.

  53. DeVante Parker - This is with Meyers in.

  54. Nelson Agholor - This is with Meyers in.

  55. Joshua Palmer - This assumes Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen are out.

  56. Nico Collins

  57. Mecole Hardman

  58. Mack Hollins

  59. Julio Jones (Questionable) - ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Julio "will be tested in pregame warm-ups to determine whether he can play", while Russell Gage and Breshad Perriman are expected to play. This will likely be somewhat of a rotation with Scotty Miller and potentially Cole Beasley also involved, so this should be messing. If Julio is out, I'll have Gage inside the top-40 WRs and Breshad Perriman in this WR5/6 range.

  60. Russell Gage (Questionable) - See WR57 Julio Jones.

  61. Romeo Doubs - See WR29 Allen Lazard.

  62. K.J. Osborn

  63. Donovan Peoples-Jones

  64. Isaiah McKenzie - This is with Davis in.

  65. Robert Woods

  66. Marvin Jones

  67. Michael Gallup (Questionable) - He'll make his debut but won't have a full workload. Noah Brown would be ranked around here if Gallup is surprisingly out.

  68. George Pickens

  69. Breshad Perriman (Questionable) - See WR57 Julio Jones.

  70. A.J. Green

Week 3 TE Rankings

Read the player notes above. Rankings are half PPR.

  1. Mark Andrews

  2. Travis Kelce

  3. Darren Waller

  4. Kyle Pitts - We talked about him here, with all-22 tape.

  5. Zach Ertz

  6. George Kittle - He was left off the final practice report.

  7. Tyler Higbee

  8. Dallas Goedert

  9. T.J. Hockenson

  10. Dawson Knox (Questionable)

  11. Gerald Everett - This assumes Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen are out.

  12. Pat Freiermuth

  13. Logan Thomas

  14. David Njoku

  15. Irv Smith

  16. Evan Engram

  17. Robert Tonyan

  18. Hayden Hurst

  19. Tyler Conklin

  20. Juwan Johnson

  21. Albert Okwuegbunam

  22. Hunter Henry

  23. Mike Gesicki

  24. Isaiah Likely

  25. Cole Kmet

  26. Taysom Hill

  27. Austin Hooper

  28. Noah Fant

  29. Cameron Brate

  30. Jonnu Smith

Week 3 Fantasy Defenses For Sickos

The defenses of the week are the Saints, Bengals, Bears, Eagles, Texans, Steelers, Panthers, and 49ers.

Underdog Fantasy "Battle Royale" DFS

To me, this is the most beatable DFS game out there, as drafters too often go off the default rankings. Simply add one or two players who are commonly undrafted to get a unique DFS team. And of course, stack. I truly believe my readers/followers would enjoy the game theory (and the edge) of this contest.

My Week 3 column on it is here.
